500 Homer Club

The 500 home run club was "founded" by Babe Ruth in 1929. At that time, he had more than twice as many home runs as any other player. Other legendary home run hitters include Ted Williams, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Mickey Mantle (who hit what is considered the longest home run ever at an estimated distance of 643 feet on September 10, 1960), Reggie Jackson, Josh Gibson, Ernie Banks, Eddie Mathews and Sadaharu Oh, and all the members of Major League Baseball's, 500 home run club. It is an individual achievement and not any award that is actually given to the player. The joy of recording first Major League home run cab be very well expressed by the batter who safely reaches home and score and when home runs are among the most popular aspects of baseball, we are pleased to present some common home runs famous firsts recorded by the historic sluggers. This is a privileged club of powerful sluggers that few belong to, and many only dream of coming near.

Hank Aaron has done it the most times, 755, and Babe Ruth has done it the second most times, 714. Willie Mays (660 HRs) is the only other to have hit more than 600. In 2004, Ken Griffey Jr. became the 20th to have hit 500, and Jim Thome and Gary Sheffield became the 37th and 38th to hit 400. Giants left fielder and future Hall of Famer Barry Bonds has homered his way into a select group of the greatest sluggers of all time. He holds the record for most homers in a season with 73 and is third on the career list with 708. He is the only player in history to have hit at least 400 home runs and stolen at least 400 bases. The all-time career record for home runs in a professional career is held by Japan's Sadaharu Oh with 868.

Entering the hallowed 500 homerun club is a consecrated process. To make the top 200 (including ties) on the all-time list, a player would need 234 or more home runs, while 179 homers would tie for 300th. To be the 400th best of all-time, you would need 148. The 500th most prolific career home run hitter, however, only has 24 less, at 124. In general, the 500th home run is not a surprise, as the player has been approaching the mark for some time. However, teams will often interrupt the game in which the player hits his 500th home run in order to honor him on reaching a historically significant milestone in what has been an excellent baseball career. The most recent who has fetched this honor is Rafael Palmeiro, who on December 9, 2005 collected his 3,000th hit that putting him in lofty company as the fourth player to have 3,000 hits and 500 home runs. Palmeiro's milestone hit was an RBI double coming off Seattle's Joel Pineiro with one out in the fifth inning.

Barry Bonds fans want to see him add to his 500 homer club total by getting San Francisco Giants tickets. Even Los Angeles Dodgers tickets or Chicago Cubs tickets let you see your favorite team on another field. Don’t forget about MLB All Star tickets.
